The Nairobi expressway in the capital of Kenya, invested, developed, constructed and operated by China Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as China Road and Bridge Corporation), has been in stable operation for the first year, and the cumulative number of vehicles passing through it has exceeded 17 million.
The Nairobi Expressway is a fast channel connecting downtown Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. It passes through important landmarks such as the Nairobi Central Business District, the National Museum, the National Stadium, the Parliament Building, and the Presidential Palace. The total length is 27.1 kilometers. Construction will start in September 2020, and it will be officially put into operation on July 31, 2022.
It is understood that in the past month, the average daily traffic flow on the Nairobi Expressway has reached 60,000 vehicles. Since the trial operation, the highest single-day traffic flow has exceeded 75,000 vehicles. In addition, the total number of ETC issued exceeded 160,000, and the proportion of ETC users increased from 26.8% at the beginning of operation to 75%.
The Nairobi expressway project is deeply involved in Kenya's economic and social development, reducing the travel time from the airport to the urban area from the previous two hours to 20 minutes, significantly reducing logistics and public commuting costs. During the construction period, the project employed more than 6,000 local employees, benefiting 200 local subcontractors and hundreds of local construction material suppliers. In addition, the project employed more than 500 local employees during the operation period, accounting for about 95% of the total number of employees.
The Nairobi Expressway Project is one of Kenya's most important infrastructures and a major project to implement the "Belt and Road" initiative. At present, the project has radiated and driven Kenya's transportation industry, tourism and other industries, benefiting millions of Kenyan residents.
